Times Square–42nd Street–Port Authority Bus Terminal

January 29, 2024

(( XMTR )) »

A sound poem / audio postcard from the depths of the vast space under 42nd Street in New York City. Recorded almost entirely during a Friday evening rush hour in January 2024 at both Times Square & Port Authority subway stations.

These stations form part of four that are interconnected along 42nd street — from west to east they are Port Authority Bus Terminal, Times Square, Bryant Park, and — by shuttle from Times Square — Grand Central Terminal. The work presents the NYC subway at what I perceived to be the busiest and quietest times, Friday evening rush hour, and Sunday morning at 9am. I used mostly recordings from the rush hour to give the listener the feeling of moving quickly through the long walkways underneath the famous NYC street experiencing the space as the rich sonic environment that it is.

Recorded using an RE50 omnidirectional microphone and a Zoom H6. This piece was produced for a non-narrated & archival audio class at NYU.

Deep within me, there is a little nagging feeling which compels me to make electronic music. It’s a big part of what draws me to audio storytelling – hearing stories synthesized through sound, creating these large worlds of digital noise. Where there is electronic music, you will find women – specifically trans women and gender non-conforming folks. Join me in an exploration of what it means to be trans and make music. This is still a work in progress. Illustration: Abelle Hayford.

Cities of Sound Leeds

Greatest Hits Radio »

Each episode relates to a city and its surrounding area, giving contributors and audiences the chance to share the pride of where they are from with the entire nation. Episodes will focus on Birmingham, Liverpool, Glasgow, Newcastle, Sheffield, Manchester, Cardiff and Leeds.

With each documentary fronted by a different presenter, the stories profile a cross section of audience members (solicited via social media) who will share memorable moments in their city’s music history, and reminisce about their personal connections. Contributions from well-known artists from each city add credibility, with all speech elements shaped around an eclectic soundtrack.

Students, graduates and staff from Universities across the UK will carry out the production process, providing students with the chance to create ‘real world’ radio content at a time when employment and freelance opportunities are hard to come by.

Making Wharf Chambers

Leeds Student Radio »

Collective co-operative dissidence is a documentary showcasing Wharf Chambers (WC), a unique exciting venue at the heart of Leeds alternative culture. I knew from the outset I wanted to produce a documentary showcasing this venue. Throughout production, the story evolved from the initial concept – looking at the venue as a queer safe space and members’ club – to the final story of co-operative venues. The documentary is light-hearted and designed to showcase the venue to those who may align themselves with those of the co-operative, its members, and the users of the venue as well as educating the listener with the benefits of this system; Coley (2017) states that the main objective is to educate.

Presenter Holly Fiddes explores how the idea for this not-for-profit community space emerged and what characteristics bring the Victorian warehouse to life, as well as giving the listener an authentic experience of the atmosphere within. The documentary was recorded in Leeds in March 2020.

Produced by Thomas Sayers and presented by Holly Fiddes.
